Youth Program Coordinator – Sydney Heritage Fleet

Sydney Heritage Fleet is a community based not-for-profit organisation which runs a highly successful program of youth-focused activities on board its 1874 tall-ship James Craig.   At present these activities include sleepovers, day-time excursions and packages that involve spending a night on the ship and participating in a day sail.

Sydney Heritage Fleet is seeking a highly motivated and well organised person with experience in working with young people to fill the role of James Craig Youth Program Coordinator.

About The Role

The primary responsibilities of the role include:

1.    Ensuring that bookings received by the Sydney Heritage Fleet for youth-related activities on the James Craig are managed in accordance with approved policies, procedures, guidelines and risk assessments.

2.    Recruiting, training and supervising volunteers to run youth activities on the James Craig and ensuring that volunteer levels remain commensurate with demand.

3.    Building the youth program on board the James Craig, both by expanding the number of bookings for current activities and introducing new activities.

4.    Overseeing governance (especially in the areas of child safety and risk assessment) of all youth programs, including but not limited to ensuring policies and procedures are legislatively compliant and regularly reviewed and following up on all incidents.

It is expected that the Youth Program Coordinator will be present for most youth activities. When not present, a suitably qualified and fully briefed substitute must be identified.

The James Craig Youth Program Coordinator will report to the James Craig Ship’s Executive (JCSE) and be supported by a Steering Committee appointed by JCSE.

The James Craig Youth Program Coordinator will be engaged as a self-employed and non-salaried person who creates their own remuneration on a commission basis only. Remuneration will be linked to activities delivered in accordance with policies and procedures.

Essential knowledge, skills and attributes

Qualifications in a youth-related discipline.
Demonstrated experience in leading programs for children and youth.
Knowledge of child protection policy and its application.
Crew member of the James Craig or willing to undertake crew training.
High levels of organisational skills.
Demonstrated ability to:
recruit, train and manage volunteers;
liaise with clients, staff and other stakeholders;
initiate new programs.
High levels of self motivation.
Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
Demonstrable ability to think strategically and innovatively.
Sound written and oral communication skills.
Flexibility and patience
Desirable
Love of sailing.
Experience sailing on a tall-ship.
Historical knowledge of life at sea on a tall-ship.
Theatricality.
